Fire Educational Resources
The Highest-Quality, Most Current, and Most Comprehensive Fire Training Resources
To engage and train today’s fire students, fire service instructors require much more than a standard textbook and free web resources to construct a great course. Effective fire training classes need to engage students to learn deeply, think critically, and work successfully with a team to prepare for and respond to a wide range of critical medical and fire emergencies. Fire service training should help students develop hard and soft skills, provide solid foundational training, and build on that learning to help firefighters continually learn and grow in their careers.
The Jones & Bartlett Learning Public Safety Group provides expert curricula addressing not only the foundational skills every firefighter needs, but also digital and print resources enabling every student to thrive as drivers and operators, fire officers, hazardous materials specialists, fire inspectors, fire investigators, fire instructors, or technical rescue experts. PSG’s high-quality texts are written, edited by, and reviewed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), International Society of Fire Service Instructors (ISFSI), and respected authors in the fire industry—including Gregory Noll, Michael Hildebrand, Marsha Giesler, Forest Reeder, Glenn Corbett, Loui McCurley, Beverley Walker, Randy Bruegman, Bernard Klaene, Richard Gann, Robert Klinoff, and many more. Our fire science resources are mapped fully to the National Fire Academy’s Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) model curriculum associate's-level and bachelor's-level courses.
Yet expertise and high-quality writing aren’t enough to equip fire students and fire science (FESHE) students to succeed in class and their careers. Traditional, lecture-based training has evolved to include a variety of instructor resources created to help instructors build students’ knowledge and skills, motivate them, and apply their learning long before they’re out in the field. That’s why Jones & Bartlett Public Safety Group’s instructor resources include lesson plans, lecture presentations, outlines, objectives, assessments, analytics, and test banks. Lieutenant Lisa Becher, a fire instructor, said that she really likes “the additional instructor materials for the book, which help make planning and delivering my classes easier. They’re great complements to the main textbook.” Ken Koerber, Fire & Technical Program Director, points out one instructor resource as a standout: “We’ve found that the use of Interactive Lectures better ensures that NFPA requisite knowledge and skills are delivered as they are intended—consistently, with repetition and knowledge checks to ensure student comprehension.”
Because students learn in different ways, PSG creates multimedia resources that promote deeper learning and help every fire student excel, strengthening Navigate eBooks and printed books with interactive lectures, case studies, skill drills, chapter summaries, high-quality photos and illustrations, workbooks, audiobooks, flashcards, practice tests, expert tips, and more. Fire service instructors let us know how much they appreciate PSG’s industry-leading student materials. Captain Kevin Reed, a fire program manager, said that Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills resources have “everything we wanted, from the book component to the online component, and it carried over well from class to class.” His class is truly engaged, too; his students “like all the components, including the interactive lectures and TestPrep questions, which we use in our program.” Perhaps most important, his students find value in the materials’ flexibility and accessibility. “Ultimately,” he said, “the students like the ability to access their learning material when and where they want so they can do additional studying at their own pace.”
Instructors value the variety of PSG fire resources not only for their ability to engage students in class and remotely, but also because they’re effective in moving their students forward. Lisa Becher said that after she and her students used PSG’s resources, her students “took their practical and written exam for Fire Fighter I, and all of them passed on their first attempt. They also achieved a 100% first-time pass rate on the Fire Fighter II exam. Our program has never had a 100% first-time pass rate for these exams before, so this is an unprecedented success.”
At Jones & Bartlett Learning Public Safety Group, fire instructors find comprehensive, engaging digital and print resources they trust for training firefighters and fire science students every day. With an array of useful teaching tools, they can customize their curriculum for students inside the classroom and online and easily adjust to accommodate longer or shorter training sessions. They also know that firefighters and fire science students find just what they need from Public Safety Group to understand challenging concepts, whether they learn best from materials that are printed, digital, audio, highly visual, interactive, or broken down into small bites. With Public Safety Group’s expert fire training materials, students are learning to serve the public with expertise, fight fires successfully, keep themselves and others safe, and save lives every day. They’re also passing their exams, working with teams to hone their skills, and learning and growing every day in their careers.
