This Recert course discusses understand the basic premise of fire prevention and public fire education. It also discusses stop, drop, and roll; to conduct exit drills in the home (EDITH); how to install and maintain smoke alarms; how to perform a home fire safety inspection; and how to conduct a fire station tour.

After completing this course, the fire fighter will be able to:

• Describe the activities that prevent fires and limit their consequences if fire occurs.
• Identify elements of public fire safety education programs covering stop, drop, and roll; exit drills in the home; the selection and use of portable fire extinguishers; and the importance of smoke alarms and residential sprinkler systems in preventing fire deaths.
• Explain the importance of residential sprinkler systems in preventing residential fire deaths.
• Stress the importance of having portable fire extinguishers.
• Recognize hazards during a fire safety survey of an occupied structure.
• Describe the steps in conducting a fire station tour.

Fire fighters who successfully complete the Fire Prevention and Public Education course are eligible for 1 hour of continuing education.
