Assessing and treating a sick or injured child is different from assessing and treating an adult. Many first responders are uncomfortable responding to calls involving children.

Martin Dominguez, training officer for the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo (Texas) Tribal FireMartin Dominguez Department, understands this challenge through his multi-decade experience as a professional in emergency services.

Dominguez used Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) Fourth Edition to train staff at El Paso Fire Department Training Academy where he worked for 23 years prior to his current post.

Dominguez says the content in PEPP has helped staff feel prepared to respond to calls few feel completely prepared for.

“PEPP emphasizes unique characteristics of pediatric patients, how to assess them, and most importantly, what to do—all in one course,” he says.

Dominguez continues by saying that the at-your-own-pace training coupled with face-to-face interaction with an instructor has been a great way to optimize learning.

“Simulations give students the opportunity to ask questions and feel more comfortable with what they recently learned,” he says.

Developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the fourth edition of PEPP pairs physicians and EMS professionals together to ensure the content is medically accurate, shares current best practices, and reflects the realities of the field.
