Our "People of PSG” series is an opportunity for friends of the Public Safety Group to get to know the people behind the products and services you know and love. Each article will feature an interview with a PSG team member and will provide insight into their role, why they choose to work for PSG, and some fun facts about the team member. You won’t want to miss this series!

Today, we had the chance to chat with Ryan Poor.

Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

I joined the Public Safety Group as a Marketing Manager back in late March. My last job was a Marketing Coordinator role with DirectPath, where I worked for just over two and a half years. In that role, my main responsibilities were content creation (eBooks, infographics, flyers, videos, etc.) for our health care products, social media management and reporting, and customer testimonial work. In my role with PSG, I am going to be focusing on creating content for our Fire products and Navigate, and finding ways to further support our customers. So far, my biggest project has been working on the Navigate Training Library for the new Navigate launch this summer.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

I like that every day is different. I really don’t feel like two days are ever going to be the same between the variety of projects I’ve been working on so far. Building on that, I like that I’m constantly busy. While it can be stressful to juggle many projects at once, I’d rather be busy than bored. Although I have not been able to meet most of my team face-to-face yet due to COVID-19, they have been great at making me feel welcome and helping me settle in at PSG.

What's something you've done that most people haven't done?

I have a Private Pilot License for flying single-engine airplanes. I started training at Eagle East Aviation at Lawrence Municipal Airport (KLWM) in July 2016, and I passed my final exam(s) in June 2017. Both my grandparents on my mom’s side of the family had their licenses, so aviation has always been an area of interest to me. Unfortunately, renting an airplane is expensive, so I can only do it every so often, but I love it when I can fly. The sights along the coast and by the mountains are always beautiful. I’ve never had any accidents or “close calls,” but I did have a tire blow out randomly on my Cessna while taxiing down taxiway C at Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport.

Outside of work, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy?

Besides aviation, I’m a massive Boston sports fan (Patriots, Celtics, Red Sox, Bruins, in order of most passionate to least passionate, even though I love them all). I coach youth basketball in the winter and baseball in the spring and summer. I grew up playing those sports, and since I love working with children, it was a natural fit for me. I’m sad that the spring baseball season was cancelled, but it was for the best with everything going on with COVID-19.

I also enjoy running. I ran two marathons back in 2016:  the Vermont City Marathon in May and the Baystate Marathon in October. The race in Vermont was very hot and was cancelled about three and a half hours into the race due to a dangerous level of heat and humidity. Luckily, I finished just before they stopped it, but it was a brutal day. I felt sick for a while after finishing.

I also have an extensive board game collection that I enjoy sharing with friends and family. Some of my favorite games are Settlers of Catan, 7 Wonders Duel, Wits and Wagers, and Star Wars: Rebellion.
