This interactive lecture explores disorders that interrupt the respiratory system’s primary functions of obtaining oxygen from the external environment and removing carbon dioxide from the body. When this process is interrupted, vital organs of the body quickly begin to malfunction. Providers must understand the importance of early detection of airway problems, rapid and effective intervention, and continual reassessment of a patient with airway or breathing compromise.

At the completion of this lesson, you should be able to:

• Recall the steps of the AMLS Assessment Pathway.
• Identify the anatomy and physiology (A&P) of the airway and ventilation.
• Differentiate between respiratory distress and failure.
• Apply the AMLS Assessment Pathway to the management of patients who are short of breath.
