For the trauma patient, as for other critically ill patients, assessment is the foundation on which all management and transport decisions are based. An early step in the assessment process is to remove a patient's clothes because exposure of the trauma patient is critical to finding all injuries. Thoroughly exposing the patient is an important and yet often overlooked step of the primary survey.
After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:
- Explain the critical value, risks, and benefits of exposing the patient during the trauma assessment.
- Describe strategies to maintain patient warmth.
- Recognize special considerations for pediatric, geriatric, and other patient populations during the trauma assessment.
- Explain the assessment and management of a patient with traumatic burn injuries.
- Identify unique factors affecting pediatric, geriatric, and other patient populations with traumatic burn injuries.
Practitioners who successfully complete the Exposure and Environment (PHTLS 10e BLS Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education through CAPCE.
