Critical injuries must be cared for quickly, and it's often difficult to manage critical injuries in the prehospital setting. The primary role of an EMS practitioner at the trauma scene is to assess and identify patient criticality and deliver a critically injured patient to the closest medical facility that can provide definitive care.

After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:

• Describe the steps for evaluating scene safety.
• Demonstrate how to perform a trauma assessment.
• Describe methods to manage hemorrhage in the prehospital setting.
• Explain how to apply the National Field Triage Guidelines to prehospital transport decisions.
• Discuss prehospital care of traumatic cardiopulmonary arrest.
• Discuss special considerations in the assessment of trauma patients and hemorrhage management.

Practitioners who successfully complete the Trauma Assessment and Exsanguinating Hemorrhage (PHTLS 10e BLS/ALS Edition) course are eligible for 1.0 hours of continuing education through CAPCE.
