This interactive lecture discusses the two major types of explosions, mechanical and chemical, which are distinguished by the source and the mechanism that produces the explosion. It defines an explosion as a sudden conversion of potential energy, either chemical or mechanical, into kinetic energy, which is the energy possessed by a system or object as a result of its motion. Whether an explosion has occurred is determined by the evidence, which includes damage or change caused by blast overpressure, and which can damage containers, structures, and equipment and cause injury to persons.

After completing this course, the fire investigator will be able to:
