This Recert course describes the components and functions of a fire alarm system and the basic types of fire alarm initiation devices. It also discusses various sprinkler heads and indicating valves, as well as describing and identifying automatic sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, and specialized extinguishing systems.

After completing this course, the fire fighter will be able to:

• Explain why all fire fighters should have a basic understanding of fire protection systems.
• Describe when and how water is shut off to a building’s sprinkler system and how to stop water at a single sprinkler head.

Fire fighters who successfully complete the Fire Detection, Protection, and Suppression Systems course are eligible for 1.5 hours of continuing education.
