Good housekeeping is an effective prevention measure. Fire inspectors should be cautious that places that have poor housekeeping practices often have other fire safety deficiencies. This interactive lecture details how to recognize housekeeping problems, take actions to eliminate them, and educate property owners on the importance of reducing these hazards.

After completing this course, the fire inspector should be able to:

• Describe the importance of good housekeeping practices in fire prevention.
• List the three requirements of good housekeeping.
• Identify and evaluate the common fire and life safety hazards related to housekeeping practices outside of buildings, such as:
  • Obstructions to fire protection equipment;
  • Fire expose threats, and
  • Spontaneous ignition threats.
  • Dust and lint accumulation;
  • Mechanical equipment;
  • Combustible materials storage, and
  • Flammable and combustible liquids.
  • Painting, coating, and finishing operations;
  • Floor cleaning and treatments;
  • Fire-protection equipment obstructions;
  • Commercial cooking operations, and
  • Compressed gas cylinders.
• Describe the methods for reducing the risk presented by unsafe housekeeping practices.

Fire inspectors who successfully complete the Safe Housekeeping Practices (Fire Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education.
