This interactive lecture discusses cold weather emergencies. Cold weather conditions cause an average of 774 deaths per year in the United States. Almost one-half of these deaths occurred in persons 65 years of age and older. The rate of hypothermia-related deaths progressively increases with age and is three times higher in males than in females after age 15 years. Major contributing factors for accidental hypothermia are urban poverty, socioeconomic conditions, alcohol intake, malnutrition, and age.
After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:
- Discuss fluid hydration guidelines and how they can be applied to prevent dehydration in cold environments.
- Identify differences in the management of mild hypothermia and severe hypothermia.
- List signs of mild, moderate, and severe frostbite and discuss how to prevent its progression.
Practitioners who successfully complete the Cold-Related Emergencies: Hypothermia (PHTLS 9e BLS/ALS Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education through CAPCE.
