When responding to an obstetric or maternity call, keep several things in mind. First, pregnancy itself is not a disease that needs treatment; rather, it is the natural continuation of the human species. For the most part, childbirth is a happy event for all involved, but emotions range from extreme excitement to panic; therefore, you must bring a sense of professional calm and control to the scene.

After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:

• Discuss the process of assessing a patient who is experiencing an emergency related to pregnancy, or who is in labor.
• Discuss complications related to pregnancy, including substance abuse, supine hypotensive disorder, heart disease, hypertensive disorders, seizures, diabetes, respiratory disorders, hyperemesis gravidarum, renal disorders, Rh sensitization, and infections.
• Demonstrate the steps to follow in postdelivery care of the infant.

Practitioners who successfully complete the Obstetrics (ALS) course are eligible for 1.0 hours of continuing education through CAPCE.
