Gynecology is the branch of medicine that deals with the diseases and routine physical care of the female reproductive system. This module reviews the female anatomy and physiology, and outlines issues unique to female patients that may be encountered in the emergency setting. The module covers the gynecologic causes of abdominal pain and looks in detail at life-threatening conditions. Also discussed are the topics of vaginal bleeding and sexual assault, and how these two emergencies should be managed in the field.

After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:

• Describe the assessment process for patients with gynecologic emergencies.
• Discuss the importance of history taking when assessing a patient with a gynecologic emergency.
• Discuss the pathophysiology, assessment, and management of infections related to the gynecologic system.
• Discuss special concerns, assessment, and management, when caring for a suspected sexual assault patient.

Practitioners who successfully complete the Gynecologic Emergencies (ALS Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education through CAPCE.
