This Recert course details the variety of roles in the Incident Management System that every fire officer should be able to assume. He or she must be prepared to perform the duties of a first-arriving officer at any incident, including assuming initial command of the incident, establishing the basic management structure, and following standard operating procedures (SOPs). The fire officer must also be fully competent at working within the Incident Command System (ICS) at every scene. The procedures to be followed are outlined in detail in this module.

After completing this course, the fire officer will be able to:

• Describe the National Incident Management System.
• Describe the postincident review process (NFPA 4.6.3).
• Describe the fire officer’s role in incident management.
• Discuss strategic-level incident management.
• Describe the National Incident Management System.
• Develop and conduct a postincident analysis of a multiple-unit incident.
• Describe the National Response Framework.
• Describe the tactical level of incident management.
• Describe the fire officer’s greater alarm responsibilities.
• Describe the task level of incident management.

Fire officers who successfully complete the Managing Incidents course are eligible for 2 hours of continuing education.
