This Recert course discusses able to recognize the clues of the presence of a hazardous material/WMD and use the resources that are available to identify the material and its dangers. Having this knowledge and ability will allow the fire fighter to handle a hazardous material incident safely.

After completing this course, the fire fighter will be able to:

• Describe the general characteristics of drums.
• Describe the general appearance of intermediate bulk containers and ton containers.
• Describe the general characteristics of bags.
• List the information found on a pesticide label.
• Describe the general characteristics of carboys.
• Describe the general characteristics of cylinders.
• Describe the common types of cylinders.
• Describe the types of chemical tankers that transport hazardous materials and their common characteristics.
• Describe the types of railroad cars that transport hazardous materials and their common characteristics.
• Describe how to identify the product, owner, and emergency telephone number on a pipeline marker.
• Describe how to identify a placard and label.
• List the nine Department of Transportation (DOT) chemical families.
• Explain how to use the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG).
• Describe the NFPA 704 hazard identification system.
• Describe markings used by the military to indicate hazardous materials and WMD markings.
• List the information about a hazardous material found on material safety data sheets (MSDSs).
• Explain when shipping papers are used.
• Describe the role of the Chemical Transportation Emergency Center (CHEMTREC) during a hazardous materials incident.
• List the information CHEMTREC needs to assist with a hazardous materials incident.
• Describe the role of the National Response Center (NRC) during a hazardous materials incident.
• Describe the common containers used to hold radioactive materials.
• Describe the signs of a potential terrorist incident.

Fire fighters who successfully complete the Hazardous Materials: Recognizing and Identifying the Hazards course are eligible for 1 hour of continuing education.
