This Recert course discusses anticipation of tactics and resources needed is a common element of fire service response to any emergency scene. When the potential for terrorist activity becomes a factor, these considerations take on a broader scope and increased concern for the safety of all involved. After students complete this chapter and the related course work, they will have an increased awareness of fire service involvement in responding to potential terrorist incidents; potential targets for terrorist activity; the tactics, agents, and devices used by terrorists; and the operational considerations for effective response.

After completing this course, the fire fighter will be able to:

• Describe the threat posed by terrorism.
• Identify potential terrorist targets in your jurisdiction.
• Describe how to respond to a terrorist incident.
• Describe the dangers posed by explosive devices.
• Explain the difference between chemical and biological agents.
• Describe the dangers posed by radiological incidents.
• List the types of terrorism.
• Describe the need for decontamination of exposed victims and response personnel.

Fire fighters who successfully complete the Terrorism Awareness course are eligible for 1.5 hours of continuing education.
