This interactive lecture explores shock. Initially, shock is reversible. However, it will rapidly progress to irreversible organ dysfunction if not treated immediately. Recognizing the early stages of shock requires an understanding of the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of the four types of shock. Early recognition and intervention are necessary to prevent the progression of irreversible shock, multiorgan failure, and death.

At the completion of this lesson, the practitioner should be able to:

• Recognize and differentiate between the stages of shock.
• Recognize and differentiate between the types of shock.
• Utilize the AMLS pathway to assess a patient in shock and identify potential diagnoses and management.
