This interactive lecture explores toxicologic emergencies, which are frequently encountered by prehospital professionals and other healthcare providers. which can be caused by accidental and intentional exposures. These emergencies include intentional overdose, unintentional poisoning, occupational exposure, environmental hazards, envenomation, biologic and chemical warfare, and radiation illness. Such emergencies cause a broad spectrum of illness. Early recognition of toxicity and identification of the causative agent can help you initiate appropriate management; maintain safe conditions for yourself, the patient, and the public; and provide essential information to your fellow responders at all levels.

After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:

  • Identify the basic pathophysiology associated with toxidromes.
  • Discuss early recognition and management of hazardous environments.
  • Describe how to rapidly recognize, diagnose, and manage common toxicologic emergencies using the AMLS Assessment Pathway.

Practitioners who successfully complete the Toxicology, Hazardous Materials, and Weapons of Mass Destruction (AMLS 3e ALS/BLS Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education through CAPCE.
