Shock can be defined as a lack of tissue perfusion at the cellular level that leads to anaerobic metabolism and an inability to produce enough energy needed to support life. Simply put, shock is one of the ways a child's body may die. The goal is to help practitioners ensure that the patient's body maintains adequate energy production for cell survival and proper function.
After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:
- Review the pathophysiology of each category of shock
- Differentiate between compensated and uncompensated states of shock
- Discuss management of pediatric patients in shock using the Pediatric Assessment Triangle (PAT) and XABCDE
- Use the most appropriate pediatric shock management intervention based on the patient's assessment findings
Practitioners who successfully complete the Pediatric Shock (NCCP Model 2025 BLS/ALS Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education through CAPCE.
