The typical human gestational period is approximately 38 weeks, calculated by the first day of the last menstrual cycle. During this period, several physiologic changes occur in multiple organ systems. The pregnant patient's response to illness and trauma may deviate from what medical practitioners expect, due to altered compensatory mechanisms caused by these physiologic changes. Underlying medical disorders may be aggravated during pregnancy. Thus, the typical pattern recognition used to aid prehospital practitioners in rapid diagnosis and treatment may be unreliable.
After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:
- Review the physiologic changes of the obstetric patient
- Differentiate between various complications that may occur during pregnancy
- Discuss management and delivery using XABCDE and the Pediatric Assessment Triangle
- Identify cardiopulmonary failure and management interventions in a newborn
- Analyze congenital heart conditions
Practitioners who successfully complete the Obstetric/Newborn Care and Congenital Birth Defects (EPC 4e BLS/ALS Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education through CAPCE.
