Pediatric maltreatment is both a medical diagnosis and a crime. The legal definition of maltreatment may vary between jurisdictions; however, the medical diagnosis can be broadly defined as physical or emotional injury to a child as a direct result of actions taken by a parent or caregiver. EMS professionals and emergency department staff will often be the first medical practitioners to evaluate the victims of child abuse. Multiple mechanisms of abuse fall under the broad term pediatric maltreatment. Some forms of abuse, such as physical injury, may be easier to recognize. Other forms, such as neglect or medical child abuse, such as Munchausen by proxy, may be more nuanced and difficult to identify. All medical practitioners who treat ill and injured children must maintain an index of suspicion for maltreatment, as recognition is the first step to preventing further harm to the child.
After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:
- Discuss the epidemiology of maltreatment
- Describe the different forms of maltreatment
- Identify a possible victim of maltreatment
- Gather an appropriate history
- Provide an appropriate level of care
- Interact professionally with caregivers
Practitioners who successfully complete the Pediatric Maltreatment (EPC 4e BLS/ALS Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education through CAPCE.
