According to recent data, nearly 1 in 5 children accessed emergency care in 2015. Most of these patients were treated and discharged from the emergency department without requiring inpatient admission or hospitalization. In that same year, the most common presenting conditions were respiratory illness, injury, and neurologic conditions. For patients presenting with an isolated medical emergency, respiratory illness and seizure disorder made up most of the chief complaints seen.

After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:

• Discuss management of pediatric medical emergencies.
• Differentiate between medical emergencies in pediatrics.
• Discuss management of pediatric patients with medical emergencies using the Pediatric Assessment Triangle and XABCDE.
• Discuss the assessment and management of pain in the pediatric patient along with the impact that untreated pain has on them.

Practitioners who successfully complete the Pediatric Medical Emergencies (EPC 4e BLS/ALS Edition) course are eligible for 1.0 hour of continuing education through CAPCE.
