Emergency calls involving ill or injured children are a low-frequency event within U.S. EMS systems. However, caring for a critically ill or injured infant or child is one of the prehospital professional's most challenging duties. It is the prehospital professional's job to bring comfort to the child, caregiver, or family and to bring order to the chaos on scene. The prehospital professional must conduct an accurate assessment and deliver effective emergency treatment to the child.

After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:

• Explain the developmental and physiological differences in pediatric patients based on their age
• Understand the Pediatric Assessment Triangle
• Explain the interplay of appearance, breathing, and circulation in the child
• Demonstrate the pediatric assessment
• Understand the use of family-centered care

Practitioners who successfully complete the Pediatric Development and Assessment (EPC 4e BLS/ALS Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education through CAPCE.
