This interactive lecture explores a fundamental understanding of electricity and electrical systems so fire investigators may determine if electricity was involved in a particular fire. The presence of electrical wiring or components in fire damage, or even in the origin of a fire, does not by itself indicate that an electrical event was the cause. An investigator finding an electrical cause to a fire event must always be able to demonstrate the specific failure and ignition mode that started the fire.
After completing this course, the fire investigator will be able to:
- Explain basic electricity.
- Identify and describe the components of a building's electrical system.
- List the conditions that must exist for ignition from an electrical source.
- Describe how to interpret damage to electrical systems.
- Explain static electricity.
- Describe the elements of fuel gas systems and how they can contribute to fire and explosion investigations.
- Describe the characteristics of fuel gases.
- List and explain the components of natural gas systems.
- Describe the components of liquefied petroleum, or LP, gas systems.
- Identify and describe components common to fuel gas systems.
- Describe common piping for fuel gas systems in buildings.
- Identify common appliance and equipment requirements.
- Identify fuel gas utilization equipment.
- Describe how to investigate fuel gas systems.
Practitioners who successfully complete the Building Electrical and Fuel Gas Systems (Fire Edition) course are eligible for 2.0 hours of continuing education.
