This interactive lecture explores the collection of data, which goes far beyond scene examination and is one of the necessary elements of the scientific method and is necessary to establish both origin and cause of a fire. Data collection begins as soon as the investigator is tasked to investigate a fire.

After completing this course, the fire investigator will be able to:

• Describe how to prepare for and conduct interviews in an investigation. 
• Explain how to gather, canvass, and survey evidence. 
• Describe considerations for collecting digital recordings and photographic evidence made by others.
• Describe systems and surveillance data that may be available. 
• Identify legal considerations when finding sources of information. 
• Identify government sources of information. 
• Identify private sources of information.
• Describe data analytics.

Practitioners who successfully complete the Data Collection Outside of the Fire Scene (Fire Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education.
