This interactive lecture explores the role of the public information officer, or PIO, the individual who is the department's liaison to the media and the public.

After completing this course, the firefighter/PIO will be able to:

• Conduct media interviews, giving accurate and timely information.
• Establish a media area that promotes effective communication and provides for the safety of the media and department members.
• Coordinate dissemination of timely and accurate information to specific community groups and the internal target audience.
• Develop a news release that is relevant, timely, concise, and accurate. 
• Develop a media advisory that is relevant, timely, concise, and accurate.
• Distribute timely and accurate information to the media using various methods available to reach the media, including electronic media. 
• Organize a news conference, using an appropriate venue, agenda, and a media information package.

Practitioners who successfully complete the Public Information Officer (Fire Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education.
