This Recert course discusses how to use a multigas meter and have the ability to build defensive control activities. These activities include absorption/adsorption, overflow and underflow dams, dikes, diversions, retentions, dilution, vapor dispersion, and vapor suppression.

After completing this course, the fire fighter will be able to:

• List and describe the hazardous materials incident levels.
• List the information to provide when reporting a hazardous materials incident.
• Describe how to plan an initial response.
• List and describe defensive objectives.
• List and describe defensive actions.
• Describe how to estimate the size and scope of a hazardous materials/weapons of mass destruction incident.
• Describe the resources available for determining the concentrations of a released hazardous material.
• Describe a secondary attack and its impact on responders.
• List the signs that indicate the possible presence of a secondary device.
• Explain how the Incident Command System (ICS) is adapted for hazardous materials incidents.
• Identify the considerations for determining the location of the incident command post (ICP).

Fire fighters who successfully complete the Hazardous Materials: Implementing a Response course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education.
